Extended DISC

What is DISC? Who created DISC?

DISC theory was developed in the early 20th century by Carl Jung, who is considered to be the father of analytical psychology. DISC was used for the first time in 1951 by the Military Intelligence Service of the United States. The aim was to better know the new recruited staff, how to further develop them, what motivated them, how they communicated, as a tool to help evaluate how they could unlock their full potential. Nowadays, these dimensions of human behavior have been translated into algorithms.

Today Extended DISC is used by tens of thousands of organizations around the world to help improve teamwork, communication, and productivity in the workplace. Extended DISC is a behavioural assessment that measures an individuals’ hard-wired DISC style and how the individual prefers to interact with others. Extended DISC helps us to better understand ourselves and others. This assessment is conducted online by filling an an online questionnaire that takes only 10 minutes to complete. The reports can be customized for all levels of the organization and they can be provided in any format, at no additional cost,

Extended DISC assessments are easy to administer, user-friendly and a powerful tool in a wide range of applications.

The DISC model divides people into four main behavioral styles. Individuals are identified as either People-oriented or Task-oriented. They are further distinguished as Reserved or Active. The resulting behavioral styles are called:

D style– Dominance

D Styles are persistent, direct, results-oriented, determined, competitive and willing people. The D style prefer to move quickly, makes independent decisions, takes risks and focuses on the main objective. They need to have responsibility and to have the situation under control. When D-styles feel pressured they want to focus even more on getting things done. They get bored with details and routine tasks.

The D-style motto is, “I did it my way”.

I style- Influence

I Styles are energetic, social, friendly, enthusiastic, optimistic, influential and talkative. They like to be the center of attention and meet new people. They talk a lot but never about details, avoid unpleasant topics and are not always direct persons. They are quick decision makers as they do not care much about details or additional information. They decide on the basis of intuition and emotions. I Style generate new ideas to move forward, generate discussion, creates a positive and pleasant atmosphere.

Their motto is, “I am a nice person! Everyone should like me!

S-style (Steadiness)

S styles are steady, calm, honest, polite people, tend to help others and are more hesitant in decision-making. S style likes to work in a team and needs help in decision making. S-style profiles prefer things to remain the same because they like stability and security. S-styles value fairness and justice. They succeed by being very persistent and maintaining a long-term perspective.

S style motto is – ‘If it is not broken, why should we change it?’

C-style (Correctness)

C-styles are the most analytical of the four DISC styles. C styles are very perfectionist, systematic, fact-oriented, detail-oriented and logical profiles. The C style ensures that everything goes as it should and the biggest fear he has is criticism of the work done. They prefer written communication and can analyze issues more than they should. C styles make correct and accurate decisions but they are also very critical of themselves.

The C-style profile’s motto is, “If we do not have time to do it right, do we have time to do it over again?”
